The Fenland Black Oak Project
Events
In 2012, a 13 metres long and perfectly preserved giant oak tree from an ancient high forest was discovered buried deep in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Against all odds, a team lead by master craftsman, Hamish Low, successfully milled and dried ‘The Jubilee Oak’ and The Fenland Black Oak Project is now creating a unique table, which will be displayed at Ely Cathedral and bequeathed to the nation.
I visited an Open Day held to mark completion of the 13 metre table top and, later, was invited back to photograph the team of volunteers that had, over the past seven years, participated in the creation of this magnificent piece of functional art.
