Street

Places

There’s a bit of an arbitrary distinction between photographing city streets and doing “street” photography. For me, street photography is more about the people than the streets so I have put empty streets in my “Townscapes” gallery and kept this section for my photographs of people going about their daily lives in urban and suburban places.

Most people don’t seem to mind being part of a photograph; in London, it is hard to avoid it. The difference here is that the photographs are usually of the people, rather than of places that happen to be populated.

Something feels a little seedy about hiding behind a hedge and surreptitiously snapping away at unwary passers-by; so I like to stand four square in the middle of the pavement with a massive lens attached to my chunky DSLR. It’s better to be blatant. I follow some simple rules: I respect people’s private moments, I don’t make people look ridiculous and I try to celebrate, not denigrate, people’s quirks and differences.
