Here, the subject is unaware that their photograph is being taken, which is designed to give the photographs an edge of realism. It’s hard to take a candid portrait without attracting the subject’s attention – so you only ever get a single shot – but, every now and again, you get some unsolicited eye contact and that is the Holy Grail. Candid portraits are legal in most countries but inherently voyeuristic and that gives the photographer all sorts of moral obligations…
